The Cutting Edge
March 2010

Welcome to the June 2010 Issue of The Cutting Edge

It seems that finding manufactured products that are “Made in the U.S.A.” is a lot harder than it has been in the past. In 2007 manufacturing production broke U.S. records, accounting for 11.6% of the Gross Domestic Product or $1.6 trillion. Since the downturn of the economy the U.S. has lost 1.5 million manufacturing jobs. This issue contains articles pertaining to keeping manufacturing opportunities within the United States and how Green Manufacturing has the potential to rebuild the domestic manufacturing industry.

Additionally, this issue features open times and pricing for our new Zeiss Contura G2 CMM. For additional information or to book a time slot for this service, contact us.

Go Green!

Green and manufacturing are two words that, in the past, were uncommon to see in the same sentence. When you think of a manufacturing plant, the first thought that comes to mind is the amount of pollution and hazardous waste that is generated in order to create these products. The first manufacturing plant was built in the 1700s and ever since manufacturing has brought an increase to the amount of environmental pollution. The question posed by today’s society is; Are there economical options which can reduce pollution and still continue to allow manufacturing production?

Manufacturing: "Made in the USA"

Finding a product that was produced in the United States, from start to finish, is not an easy feat.  A new environmentally conscious bill, Waxman-Markey Bill, has the possibility to make this even more difficult. This bill is predicted to eliminate 1.4 million manufacturing jobs by the year 2035 and would result in a $9 trillion loss of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The bill has been passed in the House of Representatives with voting results of 219 Ayes, 212 Nays, 3 Present/Not Voting, and has now been sent for Senate approval.

Live Tooling: Keeping Jobs in the U.S.

partIn the current struggling economy, manufacturing companies are looking for a way to increase productivity, decrease production cuts and still maintain top quality products. Some manufacturing companies choose to outsource some of their work to foreign countries to save money, though this makes it very difficult to maintain a high level of quality in their products and only adds to the damaged American economy.
